To Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) exco member Jufitri Joha, going back to school is the best way to improve interfaith understanding in Malaysia.
“Our youths are segregated from young due to the different mediums of school and many are not exposed to races or religions other than their own,” he notes, adding that this is most apparent among young Muslims who expect non-Muslims to understand their religion without making an effort to understand other religions.
“Because there is no engagement with people of other religions, many are ignorant. So, they not only have no respect for the others but are also prejudiced against them. Sometimes, they don't even know simple things like the names of the festivals of other religions,” he points out, highlighting that Abim has been trying to address the issue through their interfaith programmes.
Unfortunately, he laments, their reach is not as wide as the school network nationwide.
